MAIN AND FULTON STREETS (STH 23)

As prime consultant for WisDOT North Central Region (Wisconsin Rapids), KL Engineering completed a two-lane versus four-lane alternative study for a 1.4-mile section of STH 23 in the City of Princeton. As a result of KL Engineering's performance in completing the alternative study, the firm was chosen to complete the engineering design for the reconstruction project. In addition, KL Engineering was selected to coordinate, design, and develop a streetscaping plan for the project corridor.

The alternative study required coordination with the City of Princeton and WisDOT. KL Engineering evaluated the roadway for two-lane and four-lane alternatives. STH 23 follows a 90 degree turn at the Intersection of Main and Fulton Streets. KL Engineering evaluated a roundabout, traffic signals and four-way stop control for the intersection. A recommendation was then made as to which roadway and intersection alternative should be designed and constructed.

The engineering design for the reconstruction included redesign of the existing roadway from a rural section to urban section with sidewalk, utility coordination, storm sewer design, profile and cross slope adjustments to match existing driveway profiles and sanitary sewer and water main replacement.

The streetscaping plan involved coordination with the community. A theme was developed through input from local officials and community residents. The plan incorporated decorative lighting, stamped colored concrete, tree plantings with decorative grates, pedestrian bump-outs, brick pavers, benches, trash receptacles and a plaza area.
